Every time you take a slow, deep breath and feel your body settle, something specific is happening inside you: a long, wandering nerve that runs from your brainstem to your gut is sending a "safe" signal to your brain. What Is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in your body. Its name comes from the Latin word for "wandering," and for good reason — it runs from the base of your brainstem all the way down through your neck, chest, and abdomen, branching out to your heart, lungs, diaphragm, stomach, and intestines along the way.
It is the main highway of your parasympathetic nervous system — the branch responsible for rest, digestion, and recovery. When the vagus nerve is active, your heart rate slows, your breathing deepens, your blood pressure drops, and your digestive system resumes normal function. It is, in effect, your body's built-in brake pedal: the counterbalance to the sympathetic nervous system's accelerator (fight or flight).
What makes the vagus nerve especially relevant to anxiety is that it carries signals in both directions. About 80% of its fibres are afferent — meaning they send information from your body to your brain. Your gut, your heart, and your lungs are constantly reporting their status to your brain through the vagus nerve. When those signals say "everything is calm down here," your brain responds by dialling down the stress response. When they say "something is wrong," the alarm stays on.
Cleveland Clinic describes the vagus nerve as key to "fighting off stress and anxiety," noting that it helps regulate heart rate, digestion, and the immune system — all of which go haywire during chronic stress.
How the Vagus Nerve Connects to Anxiety
When anxiety takes hold, your sympathetic nervous system dominates: heart rate climbs, breathing becomes shallow, cortisol floods your bloodstream, and your body enters survival mode. The vagus nerve's job is to apply the brakes — to shift you back toward rest and recovery once the threat has passed.
The problem is that some people's vagus nerve brakes are stronger than others. This is where vagal tone comes in.

How to Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve Naturally
You do not need a device, a clinic, or any special equipment. Several everyday practices have been shown to increase vagal activity and shift your nervous system toward calm.
1. Slow breathing with a long exhale. This is the most well-studied natural vagus nerve stimulator. When you exhale slowly, your heart rate drops through a mechanism called respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and the stretch receptors in your lungs send signals through the vagus nerve that activate the parasympathetic response. The key is to make your exhale longer than your inhale — try inhaling for 4 counts and exhaling for 6 to 8. A 2023 Stanford study published in Cell Reports Medicine found that just five minutes of daily structured breathing improved mood and reduced anxiety more effectively than mindfulness meditation over one month.
2. Cold exposure to the face and neck. 3. Humming, singing, or gargling. The vagus nerve passes through your throat, and vibrations in that area can stimulate it directly. Humming at a low, steady pitch, singing (especially songs with long phrases that require extended exhales), or even gargling water vigorously can activate vagal fibres and promote a calming response. The mechanism is mechanical: the vibrations stimulate the muscles of the larynx and pharynx, which are innervated by the vagus nerve.
4. Gentle movement and exercise. Moderate exercise — walking, yoga, swimming — has been shown to improve vagal tone over time. Yoga in particular has a growing evidence base: a 2018 review in Frontiers in Psychiatry noted that yoga and meditation increase vagal activity, and that this may partly explain their well-documented effects on anxiety and mood. The key word is gentle — intense exercise temporarily activates the sympathetic system, while moderate movement tends to shift the balance toward parasympathetic recovery.
5. Social connection. This one may sound surprising, but the vagus nerve plays a central role in social engagement. It innervates the muscles of the face, throat, and middle ear — the systems you use to make eye contact, speak with a warm tone, and listen attentively. Feeling safe in the presence of others sends vagal signals that calm the stress response. Even a brief, genuine conversation with someone you trust can shift your nervous system toward rest.
