How to Do the Physiological Sigh: Step by Step
This is one of the simplest breathing techniques you can learn. You do not need a timer, an app, or a quiet room — though all of those can help.
- Inhale through your nose. A deep, steady breath that fills your lungs about two-thirds full.
- Immediately inhale again — a second, shorter sniff on top of the first breath, filling your lungs completely. You should feel your chest expand a little further.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth. Let the air out in a long, smooth stream — aim for the exhale to last roughly twice as long as both inhales combined. A gentle "whoosh" or sigh is fine.
- That is one cycle. You can feel the effect after a single repetition.
For a fuller practice, repeat for five minutes — roughly 20 to 30 cycles, depending on your pace. This is the duration used in the Stanford study.
Tips to get the most out of it:
- The second inhale is key. It should feel like a sharp little "top-up" sniff, not a whole new breath. Think of it as topping off a glass of water.
- Let the exhale be passive and relaxed — do not force the air out. Gravity and your diaphragm do the work.
