What Is Stress?
Stress is your body's response to an external demand or threat. The tricky part is that stress and anxiety produce nearly identical physical symptoms. Both can cause a racing heart, muscle tension, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and trouble concentrating. The difference lies not in what you feel, but in what is driving the feeling and how long it lasts.

What Happens in Your Body
Both stress and anxiety activate overlapping systems in your brain and body, which is why they feel so similar from the inside.
When your brain detects a threat — real or perceived — the amygdala fires an alarm signal. This triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline, raising your heart rate, tensing your muscles, and shifting blood flow away from digestion and toward your limbs. This is the classic fight-or-flight response, and it is identical whether the trigger is a genuine emergency or a worry about something that might never happen.
Under normal conditions, your prefrontal cortex — the rational, planning part of your brain — exerts top-down control over the amygdala, helping you evaluate whether the threat is real and worth the alarm. With chronic stress or anxiety, this prefrontal regulation can weaken. Research published in Biological Psychiatry has shown that prolonged stress impairs prefrontal control over the amygdala, leaving the alarm system running even when it should not be. This is one reason anxiety can feel so irrational — you know the worry does not match the situation, but your body responds as if it does.
What to Do About Each
Because stress and anxiety have different drivers, they benefit from different approaches — though many techniques help with both.
For stress, the most effective step is often addressing the source. Can you break the task into smaller pieces? Delegate? Set a boundary? Alongside that, recovery practices help your nervous system return to baseline: slow breathing, physical movement, time in nature, and adequate sleep.
For anxiety, the source is harder to pin down — which is why coping strategies focus more on regulating the nervous system itself. Techniques like diaphragmatic breathing, grounding exercises, and cognitive reframing can help interrupt the cycle of worry and bring your body out of fight-or-flight. Regular practice builds resilience over time. The APA also recommends limiting caffeine and alcohol, both of which can amplify anxiety symptoms.
For both, these evidence-based strategies can help:
- Slow, structured breathing. Extending your exhale activates the vagus nerve and shifts your nervous system toward calm.
- Physical movement. Even a 20-minute walk has been shown to reduce cortisol and improve mood.
- Grounding techniques. Methods like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique pull your attention back to the present moment and interrupt spiralling thoughts.
- Cognitive reframing. Noticing and gently challenging "what if" thoughts can reduce their power over time.
- Sleep hygiene. Poor sleep both results from and fuels stress and anxiety — protecting your sleep is one of the highest-leverage changes you can make.

Self-care techniques are valuable, but they have limits. Consider speaking with a therapist or doctor if:
- Worry or tension persists for weeks and does not improve with self-help
- Anxiety is interfering with your work, relationships, or daily routines
- You experience panic attacks, persistent dread, or physical symptoms that will not settle
- You find yourself avoiding situations because of how they make you feel
Anxiety disorders are among the most treatable mental health conditions. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has a strong evidence base, and many people see meaningful improvement within a few months.
